Announcement about the post of Chief Executive - 26/03/2008

In the original submission for unitary status, the county council proposed that the post of chief executive for the new council should be advertised externally. It is anticipated that in May this year, the government will produce regulations requiring the appointment through external competition of a chief executive by 31st March 2010 - that is, within one year of local government reorganisation.

The Implementation Executive recently considered when it would be best to make the appointment. It decided that the recruitment and selection of a chief executive should be left to the new authority following the elections in May 2009. This means that the recruitment process is likely to begin in summer 2009 with the person appointed coming into post as soon as possible.

For the period between 1st April 2009 and the new chief executive taking up post, the existing Wiltshire County Council chief executive will continue to be chief executive of the new council.
